BIOTEXTILES & LABORATORY CRAFT
2014-2018
This section focuses on lab-based development of bioengineered textiles and other cultured biomaterials through textile methodologies, exploring how living matter can be transformed into sculptural and infrastructural forms. The works position textiles as proto-biotechnologies—systems of structure, tension, porosity, and repair that parallel the self-organization (autopoeisis) of living tissues. In these works, materials are responsive, shaped through ongoing negotiation with vital forces. These projects disrupt industrial imperatives of efficiency and control by slowing down, to highlight growth, maintenance, and failure as generative conditions, and advance a practice based on haptic knowledge, material agency, and ecological interdependence.
