FROM CUP TO DISH: 3D BIOPRINTING AND MENSTRUAL STEM CELL CULTURE

This independent research, funded by the Canada Council for the Arts and conducted as a solo scientific investigation by WhiteFeather, laid the groundwork for the internationally recognized project Sentient Clit: The Pussification of Biotech, co-created with Jiabao Li. Presented globally, the project received a 2024 Ars Electronica S+T+ARTS Prize jury nomination for its bold fusion of speculative biotech and technofeminist critique.

WhiteFeather was invited by scientific collaborators into a Montreal-based laboratory to undertake a focused investigation into 3D bioprinting, using a high-end CELLINK bioprinter to prototype menstrual cups as anatomical scaffolds for the cultivation of menstrual stem cells. This work was conducted adjacent to her doctoral research in tissue engineering with menstrual fluid (2019–2023), while advancing a new line of inquiry into the symbolic and biological potential of menstrual architectures.Experimental procedures also included flow cytometry to identify and characterize the cell types isolated from her own menstrual fluid—demonstrating a rigorous, embodied approach to self-directed bio-research.

Drawing on over a decade of experience with bioengineering methods, WhiteFeather led both the technical experimentation and the conceptual direction of the project. Her approach foregrounds the menstrual body as a generative site for scientific innovation, feminist resistance, and cultural reclamation. Rather than positioning biotechnology as a tool for external control, the project reclaims it as a mode of self-directed inquiry and embodied autonomy.

Due to legal stipulations imposed by the institution in which they work, the scientific collaborators cannot be publicly named. Nonetheless, their support under WhiteFeather’s artistic leadership was vital to the technical development of The Pussification of Biotech.

This research exemplifies a radical technofeminist methodology—reimagining bioengineering as a form of ritual, worldbuilding, and corporeal sovereignty through the creation of new forms grown from the menstruating body.
