MAY DAY! APARTMENT VERNISSAGE
2011
Developed in Fredericton, New Brunswick, this apartment vernissage engaged the domestic interior as an exhibition site, drawing on histories of artist-run initiatives and alternative presentation formats outside institutional gallery spaces. Organized collaboratively with members of the local arts community, the event transformed my private residence into a multi-room exhibition and gathering.

Bringing together works by both emerging and established artists, the vernissage fostered a space for risk-taking and experimental approaches to artmaking and display. Spanning live music performance, poetry readings, art candy-making, interactive installations, painting, photography, video, textiles, and illustration, the event functioned as both exhibition and party. Works were distributed throughout the space, inviting movement, encounter, and participation.

Blurring boundaries between public and private, artist and audience, the event foregrounded collective authorship and the production of culture through shared space, experimentation, and exchange. A number of the featured artists have since gone on to achieve national recognition within the Canadian arts landscape, underscoring the event’s role as an early site of experimentation and visibility.
Featured artists included ADAM MACDONALD, AMANDA JARDINE, ANDREW TITUS, CELINE GORHAM, CHRIS FRIEL, CHRIS GILES, D'ARCY WILSON, IAN MILLER, MARIE FOX, STEPHANIE WEIRATHMUELLER, STEPHEN MAY, THE LILAC AFFAIR, and WHITEFEATHER.
